some of my favorite quotes

here are some quotes i found in my signature files i use, but haven't used for a while. most are e.e. cummings and friedrich nietzsche.

Friedrich Nietzsche

  • One has to pay dearly for immortality;
    one has to die several
times while one is still alive.

  • Perhaps I know best why it is man alone who laughs;
he alone suffers so deeply that he had to invent laughter.

  • There is always some madness in love.
But there is also always some reason in madness.

  • You must have chaos within you to give birth to a dancing star.

  • And if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.

e.e. cummings

  • I'd rather learn from one bird how to sing
than teach ten thousand stars how not to dance

  • unbeingdead isn't beingalive

  • since feeling is first
    who pays any attention
    to the syntax of things
    will never wholly kiss you...

the MAN, charles bukowski

  • i put out the lamp and get in bed
beside her, she thinks i'm there
    mumbles a rosy gratitude
    as i stretch my legs
    to coffin length
    get in and swim away
    from frogs and fortunes.
-- excerpt from "i am dead but i know the dead are not like this"

  • take a writer away from his typewriter
    and all you have left
    is
    the sickness
    which started him
    typing
    in the
    beginning.
-- excerpt from "about the PEN conference"

the others

  • When you are courting a nice girl an hour seems like a second.
When you sit on a red-hot cinder a second seems like an hour.
    That's relativity.
                   ---Albert Einstein

  • The more I study religions the more I am convinced that
man never worshipped anything but himself.
                   ---Sir Richard Burton

  • "Picture the sun as the origin of two intersecting
6-dimensional hyperplanes from which we can
deduce a certain transformational sequence which
gives us the terminal velocity of a rubber duck ..."
                   ---unknown
