bagheads and jumpseat man-bitches
it is raining today. it's been raining for 3 days now, off an on, mostly on. it's nice. a couple funny things i notices though. most people use motorcycles or scooters for conveyance here. cars are basically only used a taxis, and still there are more rickshaws than taxis. so these people on their motorcycles have to ride in the rain as well to get their stuff done. they pack 2, 3, sometimes 4 people on these bikes and in the rain, someone needs to hold the umbrella. it is hilarious. you have to hold the umbrella over and in front of the driver due to the resultant rain direction from the horizontal velocity of the bike. but then you have wind resistance and that collapses the umbrella. we saw a guy today having a hell of a time with it. we were chuckling to ourselves in the comfort of our dry, full enclosed toyota qualis. ahhh.
and the ostrich theory is prevalent here. you know, if i can't see you, you can't see me. but modified. here it has to do with rain and bags. it is funny to see some of the villagers walking down the road with a plastic bag covering their hair. it's tied tightly around their head just above or below the ears. these people are soaked head to toe and sometimes the bag is more covering on their body than anything else, and the only reason i can come to is it's psychological (delusional): "if my head is not wet, i am not wet". or maybe it is more logic based (though that is unlikely from personal experience): "rain falls from the sky, the sky is above me, if i protect my head from feeling anything that could come from above me, it can't possibly rain.". i don't know, it is just funny.
it's 5:30PM on a saturday, and the customer JUST called me to come in tomorrow to work. LAST WEEK i blew up at him because he did the same thing. i told him we need to know by thursday or we are making plans. i DID cave this time because we have another crew onsite ready to do a parts changeout. they've been here for 4-5 days already and can't progress until some work is finished that we aren't close to fixing. i'm ONLY doing it for the turks who are dying to get out of here. we are NOT working next sunday. screw that.
