my whatzit

so, my trip down to tampa was more sociable than usual. what seems like eons ago, i was working in trinidad, and i’d taken a book about how to make people like you, or how to start conversations or meet people or something like that. i don't remember much about the book except that the author used several really weird terms like "have sticky eyes" and "have a whatzit". the one thing i took away from the book is the "have a whatzit" to start conversations. that was easy for me because i like gadgets.

on the flight from pittsburgh to DC, i was seated next to a middle-aged woman who noticed my kindle DX. i was testing the DX because in the "portait" position, it shows an entire page and also what page you are on out of how many the book has. when you turn the kindle to the "landscape" position, the text turns accordingly, but it also sizes up the font. for some reason this does not change the page count (i determined that you have to use the joystick to scroll down the page in this position). the lady next to me noticed my experiment and asked how i liked it. i told her it was good, but no backlighting. she told me she was looking for an e-reader for an elderly friend of hers who wanted to learn calculus and figured and ebook would be the best way. i don't know why i didn't go further into why an elderly man would want to learn calculus. my excuse will be that i was nervous that i was having to converse with someone without prior preparation. i let her check it out, she apologized several times about interrupting, but i had no problem with it. i learned she works for a company that organizes clinical trials for HIV/AIDS treatments, and they are showing some promise in, not a cure, but a drug that makes it more difficult to transmit. fancy. as our conversation was reaching it's natural end (because i'm still learning how to do this whole talking to people thing), the pilot made the announcement that we were about to land and all electronic devices had to be switched off. that, i told her, was another drawback of the e-reader. she apologized again that i didn't get to read very much at all, but i re-asserted that it was no problem, and that i enjoyed the conversation.

on my connecting flight from DC to tampa, i was seated in the middle. from the way the guy to my left was glued to his blackberry, i figured he was a business type. he had on slacks, collared shirt, and had a clean haircut. i thought the lady to my right was just a crotchety old ethnic grandma. she seemed inconvenienced when she realized there would be a big man sitting next to her. once we were at cruising altitude, i whipped out the kindle to try to get some reading done. it didn't take very long at all before the lady to my right asked if you could change the font size on the kindle. i'm pretty sure you can, though i wasn't able to figure out where while trying to show her the functions that i DID know how to operate. i mentioned how it was very convenient for me since i travel a lot, and that it was much easier to carry 400 books on this than in a steamer trunk. the man to my left asked what i did, so i elaborated a bit. in trying to fit in with you humans, i then tried to bounce the question back, asking what he was doing in DC. i found out that he was there for an interview at a new church, and he actually lives in tampa. after some brief shit-chat, we found out that the lady to my right was a principal in england. she splits her time between london, where her husband works, and sarasota, where they are snowbirds. they got into a conversation about separation of church and state (he believes it should be, she experienced the opposite being in england, there is no such thing). he was concerned about the downfall of morality and traditional values. he spoke of how dysfunctional families breed dysfunctional families, so soon we would be exponentially out of control as a society. i tried to bite my tongue through most of this. i shouldn't try to be confrontational AND sociable. that's just too much on one plate. apparently, the pastor started out as an engineer in college and then found (lost?) his way to god, so he went to seminary. somehow it was thrashed out that i was an atheist, so he wanted to pick my brain. at least that's what he said. while i was curious about what a pastor does when it's not sunday, what does a church interview entail, and how can seminary last so long when there's really only one book, it seemed to me that he just wanted to know where i went astray, what caused me to lost faith so young, etc. he wanted to re-convert me rather than actually converse. it wasn't abrasive by any means, just disappointing. the first half of the trip, i thought he was kind of a normal person, open to new ideas, but then he fell into the same religious role i'd expected in the first place. we briefly talked about evolution and "irreducible complexity" and there having to be a maker. i hadn't expected to get into a theological debate, so i was a bit scattered, though sufficient, in my defense of what i think is right, but i got my point across.

before we knew it, the flight was over and we decided to introduce ourselves (somehow, i always do that backwards). i'd met ThePastorJohn and ThePrincipalDoris. his wife and four kids were waiting to pick him up, she was driving down to sarasota, and i was going to rent a car to get me to my hotel and my next assignment.

and all these things happened because of my "whatzit".

oh, and on a completely unrelated point, florida drivers are fukking nuts. they can't drive for shite, they speed, tailgate, and cut people off all willy nilly. you guys suck, really.

my fear

i want to buy a house. for some reason, i want to buy a house so bad. i think it would be really cool, just the idea of having a house, a place i go back to that is mine. i don't have much to furnish it with (2 hammocks, flat-screen TV, stereo, XBOX360, a load of books, and the latest gadgets i've acquired on the internet), but i think that would be cool, too. i think minimal would work for me.

still, i just can't commit. hell, i can't even commit to looking! i doubt my ability to make a good investment. i know one of my weaknesses is that i'm a consumer. i do my very best to stimulate this economy as much as possible, very often to my financial detriment. i like money, and i want money for security purposes, but i can't be bothered to try really hard to get it. that's kinda why i relate to this comic. buying a house would be awesome and having parties and bbqs and getting together for races would be the bomb, but having to go through the process of combing through the fine print of a lease agreement because i might screwed on legalese... i just can't fathom it.

peter pan... out.

my impulse buy

well, TheSteadman was ragging on me for reading "monk" books since i've run out over here in egypt. i'm currently stuck with the bible and the qur'an left, and my "learning to read and write arabic" book. so, last night i was in the room and TheSteadman was online in between jobs so we started talking. i'd asked her earlier to take a picture of her holding her kindle, and if she could also take a picture of the kindle next to a standard paperback, just to get a visual feel for the size. i was debating between getting a kindle or a kindle DX.

since i was bored and researching and she was bored, she told me to buy is so she could shop vicariously through me... so i bought the DX. my main concern is fragility. i've heard several people complain that they put them in their bag on the way to work, and when they get to work, the screen has cracked. amazon shows a 30" drop test, but it's not the drop i'm so concerned about it, the twist. it is about 10" at it's longest and 1/3" thick. i'm afraid this is going to facilitate damage, not from blunt force as in dropping, but from torquing as in it being twisted while in a bag or backpack. well, the deal is done, it's bought and paid for, so we'll see how well it goes when and if i ever get home to play with my new toy. one good thing is that the DX has a native pdf reader, so i can DL free books online in pdf to read instead of paying $9.99 for books from amazon. i AM a comparison/bargain shopper... kinda, despite the stupid things i buy, i DO try to find the best deal on said stupid things.

i'm trying to hunt down some more pix of scotland. i still have stirling pix to post, and trying to get some from rosslyn. i'll get those up in a day or two. i'm working on a third blog i'll unveil soon, and then i'll seriously try to finish up the oktoberfest saga before it becomes a year old story.

love is all you need... but a little duct tape never hurts

i found this quote at http://qdb.us/116288. man, that's a great site

<Cyan> Some dude tried to break in last night at like 2am, but I was on the comp and it's like right beside the window so I heard the faggot.
<Cyan> Anyways, I grabbed the folding chair and as soon as he was like halfway through I beat the fucking shit out of him.
<Cyan> So he's laying here unconscious and I call the cops. Once they get here, they search him and look at what he fucking had:
<Cyan> 8 track tape (unlabeled), Flashlight (no batteries), Half eaten box of Fig Newtons, Measuring tape, Instructions to "Monopoly."
<dan> Dude, you fucking killed McGuyver!

this time tomorrow

i'll be at the port of spain airport sitting in a chair, anxiously awaiting the boarding call for my flight home through miami. i get in about 3:30pm, and i can't wait. this was a good job (the site lead must've liked my work as he is bringing me with him to new foundland at the end of october for a job), but it's always nice to go home, especially when you have new toys waiting for you, like my new truck and a bunch of stuff i bought online and forget what i got (xmas in october). so awesome.

in other news, the trinidad highway patrol are pretty strange from a U.S. standpoint, at least from what i hear from the drivers. i've noticed us passing the highway patrol on the highway before. the patrol car had his lights on, and was somberly cruising along the highway, not stopping anyone and in no particular hurry. apparently, they rarely pull people over for speeding. the speed limit is 80kph, and they drive that speed with their lights on to pace people. we usually pass them around 100kph, and they have no problem. it seems they only pull you over if you go, maybe, 140+kph, or are driving recklessly. also, whenever they hear about a big party, they set up a sobriety checkpoint, but it's not like a U.S. checkpoint. they'll stop everyone leaving the party, give them a sobriety test, and if they fail, someone else in the car has to drive... that's all, no fine, no jail time, no DUI charge. if no one in the car can drive, they have you pull over to the side of the road and sleep it off. they come by every couple of hours and test you until you are sober enough to drive. how crazy is that?

well, i gotta pack up all my work stuff here in the office (hardhat, etc). more from the U.S. when i get there.

my latest gadgets

here'a a pic of a few of the latest gadgets i've been cash-foolhardy enough to purchase.

on the left, you'll see my new watch. i'm not sure how it started, but i seem to have started a watch collection. i bought three the other day on an outing to cabela's. one even tells the time, date, phase of the moon, the tide, and UV rating, but i digress. this watch on the left is a decent timepiece and still carries with it a 2GB thumb drive. how cool is that? i can keep all my essential programs, work stuff, maybe even a porn or two for emergencies RIGHT ON MY WRIST.

in the middle, you find my new iMuffs. it sounded dirty to me too, but they are pretty rock on so far. i was getting frustrated when i went to the gym because the cord on my headphones was just an inch or two too short and when i would exercise, the earbuds would come out, so i got this. the iMuffs are bluetooth wireless headphones for the iPod. the transmitter plugs into the bottom port of the iPod and transmits up to 30' to the headset. on the right earphone there are controls for pause/play, rewind, and fast forward, plus power and volume. i tried it out today on a bike ride, and it worked perfectly. another added benefit (that i haven't tried out yet) is you can link it to your bluetooth phone. when you get a phone call, it pauses the iPod, you hit play/pause to answer or hold for 2 seconds to cancel the call, the headphones have a microphone in them, then when you are done, the iPod unpauses. apparently it has a 16-hour life and is very light, but i hear report the neckband breaks easily. i'll keep you updated.

the thing on the right is called a ninja remote. it can steal control of pretty much any TV/cable box you point it at. after a few minutes, it finds the code, and *BLAM* you have control. pretty nifty.

i caved

this past weekend, i went to columbus to watch the daytona 500 with the BTBz. i was witness to T playing 'gears of war' and BTVJGJHo playing 'NCAA 2007' plus he showed me some moves on 'gears of war'. 'gears of war' is such an awesome game. due to my travel, i figured it wouldn't be feasible to get an XBOX 360, but today i caved. i was at EBGames getting a PS2 for TheNephew, and i got the buying bug, so i got myself an XBOX 360 bundle, the wireless adapter, and 'gears of war'. i just got my XBOX live gold subscription taken care of and even have a few of the BTBz on my friend's list already.

babe, i'm sorry but you know me and my frivolous spending on gadgets. i got the service coverage, though, that was a good call. you gotta love me.

any suggestions on some XBOX 360 titles i should get? thanks.
